Let Me Be Sterilised!

When we first introduced the idea of making a documentary about female sterilisation, one name that was provided as an example of a young woman determined on being sterilised was Holly Brockwell. You may have seen Holly on the news or on television programmes like This Morning and Loose Women discussing her desire to be sterilised even though she was only in her twenties. It was a battle she fought over four years against doctors who deemed her too young at 26. Now 31, Holly won her fight to be childfree last year, aged 30, and has stated in an interview with The Independent (2017) that she does not regret her decision at all.

Holly Brockwell is only one example. There are so many women who have made the decision early in life that they do not wish to have children. Their reasons vary - from no maternal instinct or not liking children, to medical reasons where they do not wish to pass down illness, and to others who are simply very happy not having children regardless if they like them or not.

So why are the NHS so dead set against women under the age of thirty being sterilised? It is well known that the range of contraception available is not full proof in preventing pregnancy and with the amount of women 100% decided upon not having children, should it be something that is given more consideration by doctors?

In Child Free By Choice, Megenta will be chatting to a couple of medical professionals involved in the process of sterilisation, and asking them about their thoughts on women under thirty being sterilised, what the health risks are, and why the NHS is so adverse to the procedure.
