About the film
So many women make the decision from a young age that they want children. Others make the opposite choice. However, many feel that contraception isn’t good enough to prevent pregnancy. It is not sure solution to prevent pregnancy and takes a lot of commitment for the woman. Men are given vasectomies without much thought yet when it comes to female sterilisation the reaction is comparatively different.
Currently a woman cannot be sterilised under the age 30 on the NHS, it is preferable for her to be in a committed relationship and to have had children already before being sterilised. To go private, it costs a lot of money but even then, it is often advised against as once it is done it is very difficult to reverse.
Child Free By Choice is exploring the reasons why women want to be sterilised and their choice to be child free. We follow presenter Megenta Balcombe on her journey to discover more about the options available to women who do not want children, speaking to doctors, nurses, and those who have gone through the sterilisation process. We also speak to Chloe who is strongly opposes sterilisation.
Should women under the age of 30 be given the option to be sterilised? Or is it something that simply shouldn’t be available to anyone?
